Veiled City: 24 takes, one keeper, and a tape machine

Mara Voss does not talk about prompts the way most people do. She talks about them the way an engineer talks about a mic placement: a variable to be moved one notch at a time, with everything else frozen.
Veiled City started as a batch of eight generations on a Tuesday night, all from the same base prompt, each changing exactly one clause. By Friday the batch had grown to 24. One survived.

The keeper then left the computer entirely. Voss printed it to a Tascam 388, drove the tape a little too hot, and resampled the return. The low end was rebuilt by hand: everything under 120 Hz mono, the kick fundamental carved away from the sub.
The final test was not a meter. It was a Funktion-One at 2 a.m., and a dance floor that did not empty.
